Miami Vice was not only a “cop” show, it brought about a whole new style in the 80’s. Guys began wearing t-shirts with dress coats in vivid colors. Yes even pink! I know, in this day and age real men wear pink but in the 80’s it would have not been “cool” if it had not been for Miami Vice. Miami Vice had an impact on the fashion and music trends of the 80′s. The “T-shirt under Armani jacket”-style became popular in the 80′s as a result of the show.

Pastel colors used in the series in clothes as well as in architecture. Crockett’s permanent 5 o’clock shadow beard created a temporary fashion trend among men in the 80′s. Yes, it was enticing to the ladies. Miami Vice influenced men’s fashions toward Italo-casual and interior decor toward the Memphis look.

The 80′s TV show Miami Vice featured detective Crockett and his partner Tubbs, a black New York cop looking for his brother’s killer. Together the two cops took on the Florida drug world. The irony is the fact that the war on drugs is never ending even though the Miami Vice ended in the 80’s.

The Miami Vice series focused on the Miami Metro-Dade Police “Vice” Department and it’s prolonged battle with the illicit drug, prostitution, and weapons crime underworld, that still exists today. The crime rate for Miami today is very high. There are just as many drugs, immense amount of gangs, and prostitution is a given in a party town like Miami.

The soundtrack for the Miami Vice series is one of the most successful of all times. The show featured songs by 80′s music artists like Glenn Frey, Phil Collins and Kate Bush. It also had original music composed by Jan Hammer, the former keyboardist for the Mahavishnu Orchestra. The Miami Vice soundtrack album held the #1 position on the charts for 11 weeks. Hammer won two Grammy awards for the show’s theme song. This only added to the pop culture that now thrives today because of great 80’s action shows such as these.

Miami Vice also had many famous guest stars including Willie Nelson as a retired Texas Ranger, musicians Gene Simmons (from KISS), Glen Frey, Frank Zappa and Ted Nugent as drug criminals (this surprised no one as they played the parts well). Other musicians included Phil Collins as a game show host, Miles Davis played a pimp (a very convincing one at that), Frankie Valli as a mob boss and Little Richard appeared as a street preacher (Yes, Little Ritchie as a preacher).

The show eventually faded away but the music and characters will forever be etched into our memories.
